The Mikis Theodorakis Virtual Museum
PROJECT OVERVIEW

The Mikis Theodorakis Virtual Museum was created to highlight the composer’s life, musical legacy, and cultural impact during his years of exile in Zatouna. The project includes an interactive touchscreen application for the museum space, an educational experience for young audiences, and a digital archive accessible via web.

As the UI/Product Designer, I designed a clear, interactive, and museum-friendly user experience that functions seamlessly both on a large touchscreen and online. The focus was to deliver an accessible and respectful digital narrative that organizes extensive historical material into intuitive, structured pathways.

Introducing
THE MIKIS THEODORAKIS VIRTUAL MUSEUM

HOMEPAGE

The homepage introduces the experience with a clear layout and touch-friendly navigation. Short text blocks and large entry points guide visitors into the main sections (Life in Zatouna, Life & Work, The Musician, Childhood Years).

The design supports quick orientation and smooth transitions, reflecting the calm, respectful atmosphere of the museum installation.

LIFE IN ZATOUNA

The Life in Zatouna section follows an interactive-documentary structure, guiding visitors through narrative slides that unfold vertically and horizontally. This format allows events, testimonies, and contextual material to be presented at a natural, steady pace.

A progress bar at the bottom provides orientation, while layered textures, subtle motion, and video segments create an immersive yet respectful visual atmosphere.

LIFE & WORK - INTERACTIVE MENU & CHILDHOOD YEARS

The Life & Work menu uses vertical scroll-based navigation, revealing each thematic section as the user moves up or down. A rotating disc reinforces movement and echoes the documentary-style aesthetic.

The Childhood Years section shifts to horizontal slide navigation, presenting early life events through structured cards, images, and notes. The layout keeps the storytelling clear and intuitive across both touchscreen and web environments.

THE FAMILIES

This section highlights two key family narratives that shaped both the early and later life of Mikis Theodorakis.

Users can explore:

  • His father’s family background and the environment that influenced his formative years.

  • His later family life, introducing the partner and children who supported him throughout his career.

Each narrative is presented with archival photographs, contextual notes, and a warm, documentary-style layout that maintains clarity and emotional continuity.

MIKIS THEODORAKIS - THE MUSICIAN

This section presents the composer’s musical work through an interactive circular interface inspired by vinyl records. Each node represents a different piece or genre, allowing users to explore symphonic music, opera, theatre, songs, and more. Opening a node reveals a dedicated card with album artwork and details. The design blends archival textures with simple, touch-friendly interactions for a clear and engaging browsing experience.

DIGITAL ARCHIVE

The digital archive uses a minimal, neutral visual language to keep attention on the material. Soft pastel tones and a clean grid layout support fast scanning, helping users locate documents and photographs without distraction.

Each item opens in a simple detail view with clear metadata, ensuring an efficient, unobtrusive research experience across touchscreen and web environments.
